Actress and singer Clare Grogan is best known for appearing in the 1981 film Gregory’s Girl, one of the most popular British films of all time, and for fronting the 80s pop group Altered Images.
The Scottish new wave group Altered Images was formed in 1979, and went on to have a series of hit singles, such as Happy Birthday, I Could Be Happy, and Don’t Talk to Me about Love. As teenagers, the group cut a demo and sent it to Siouxsie and the Banshees, who were impressed enough to have the band open for them for several dates in support of their Kaleidoscope record. Two impressive BBC Peel Sessions helped the band land a contract with Epic. The Banshees' Steve Severin took them under his wing, producing their first two, and unsuccessful, singles. Dead Pop Stars gained controversy for its release shortly after the assassination of John Lennon. NME voted Altered Images Best New Group of 1981.
Clare Grogan's household name status was reinforced after her role in Bill Forsyth's Gregory's Girl. Her other acting appearances include Red Dwarf, Father Ted, and EastEnders, as Ian Beale’s love interest. She recently became a children’s author, and her first book was published in October 2008, a novel, aimed at aged 7 and up, titled Tallulah and the Teenstars, about a girl who forms a pop band.
